English at Walkington Primary School

At Walkington Primary School, our English curriculum is designed to ignite a passion for reading and writing in every child. We aim to develop essential literacy skills that empower students to express themselves confidently, creatively and effectively. Our approach fosters a love of literature, promotes comprehension and vocabulary development and encourages critical thinking through engaging and diverse texts. At Walkington Primary School, we are committed to creating a supportive and inclusive environment where all students can thrive, ensuring they are well-equipped for future academic success and lifelong learning. We understand that literacy is at the very heart of of the entire curriculum and that children who are confident and adept readers, writers, speakers and listeners will be empowered to succeed in all other areas. We also understand and value the importance of the vital role played by parents/carers in the development of reading, writing, speaking and listening and in the nurturing of positive habits, particularly attitudes towards reading.

The school recognises that each pupil will be at a different point in terms of their understanding of literacy by the time they transition to KS3; however we are committed to providing a learning pathway which is inclusive of everyone irrespective of abilities.
